Boy Scouts of Katy Texas Troop 987

About Us      Troop News      New to Scouting?

Welcome!
We are in Katy, Texas. We are dedicated to the complete scouting experience and truly believe the program helps boys develop lifelong leadership skills, lessons, and experiences important to most young men.

About Our Troop

We are chartered by Westland Baptist Church and we’re in the Texas Skies District of the Sam Houston Council.  We meet at 7pm, every other Monday at Westland, located at 1407 W. Grand Parkway S. Katy, TX 77494.  Have tents… and will travel.   We love camping and try to go once a month.  We also attend a Summer Camp which is usually a week.  All Campouts are optional but we usually go to cool places and this is where the boys earn a lot of merit badges and gain great experiences.  The troop is divided into groups (Patrols) and all activities and events are run by the boys.  They decide when and where they’re going camping, what they need, what they’re eating and how.  It’s a great program.  Our objective is to help the boys complete the tasks, lessons, and challenges in a step by step process that in the end, qualifies each Scout for the opportunity to earn the highest rank of all, Eagle Scout; before he turns 18 years old.

About the Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated to provide a program designed to develop character, sense of citizenship, and personal fitness training. Please visit our website for additional information and national links.

Who can join and how?

Each boy must be 10 1/2 years old and in the fifth grade.  If they are in Cub Scouts or Webelos, they should remain until they earn the Arrow of Light Award.

Many Scouts join a troop near home, but you have a choice.  We recommend that you visit more than one troop before choosing one. We all follow the same general format, but each troop has unique traditions and personality.

After selecting a troop, parents should attend the first meeting to complete an application form, pay required fees, and obtain the basic health and consent forms. The fees and completed forms are required before your child can participate in any Troop activities (National policy).

How Much does it cost?

Our one-time $65 Induction Fee covers the cost of a Troop T-shirt, Scout Handbook, book cover, merit badge sash, and a troop neckerchief with slide.  Each scout needs to purchase a “Class A” uniform shirt.  Each campout is $20 plus $10+ for food.  Lastly, ongoing membership dues are $10 per month for activity expenses.

Sound like a lot of money?  We have solutions.  To help scouts learn the value of money and hard work; we offer several fundraisers that enable each boy to earn funds to go towards their personal scout expenses.  Additionally, we want everyone who desires to be a scout to not be held back due to finances.  Grants can be made to assist those designated with a need. A discussion with the Troop’s Committee (Executive Board) can help set that up.
